Important Zoning Board Hearing continued to March 2nd on March 4th at 8:00.
The Weston Zoning Board of Appeals will hear the case of Regis College this evening. Please attend
The battle continues!
On January 21, 2009, Judge Alexander Sands of the Land Court ruled that the Weston
Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) must decide within 60 days whether Regis College’s
proposal to build an enormous Aging-in-Place Center on its Wellesley Street East
Campus is exempt from compliance with zoning By-Laws because of the State’s Dover
Amendment.
(The “Dover Amendment” provides that if the facility is an
EDUCATIONAL USE of the land, then local zoning regulations do not apply,
and Regis is free to build its 750,000 square foot project, subject
only to minor Weston
restrictions.)
You should have been notified that the ZBA will hold a public hearing on March 2,
2009 as part of its decision making process.
What do we need from you?
The Regis plan calls for an immense, eight building (some 11 stories tall) , 362
unit, 750,000 square foot development with 600 parking spaces.
In spite of the fact that the project makes no economic sense; in spite of the fact
that it has been strongly criticized by most Weston residents and Town officials
since it was first unveiled over four years ago; Regis continues to spend millions
of dollars in legal fees to make it happen. The reason has nothing to do with
education, and everything to do with money.
THE REGIS DEVELOPMENT IS NOT AN EDUCATIONAL USE OF THE LAND BUT, INSTEAD, A BLATANT
ATTEMPT TO MAXIMIZE ITS FINANCIAL VALUE BY TRYING TO CIRCUMVENT WELLESLEY STREET
SINGLE FAMILY USE ZONING.
It is ESSENTIAL that you express opposition to the Regis plan by contacting Weston
Selectmen (Michael Harrity, at HarrityM@comcast.net, Douglas Gillespie, at
Dgillespie751@att.net, and Steven Charlip at scharlip@choate.com).
And by attending the ZBA public hearing on March 2 at 7:30 P.M. in the auditorium
of Weston Town Hall.
You have been strongly supportive of SRO in the past. Please help us continue the
battle and emerge victorious by staying involved.
Thanks.
